Richard Beynon prosecuted Marcus Hughes along with others for the illegal deposit of 26,000 tonnes of waste across Liverpool, Lancashire, Yorkshire and Humberside. This case was highlighted in recent media reports concerning the defendants and their connections between organised crime and waste-related offences.
Operation Cesium was a complex investigation into large-scale waste dumps which exposed a sophisticated scheme involving false rental agreements, abandoned baled waste and forced entry to unused sites, all disguised with apparent legitimacy.
Their actions avoided £2.7 million in landfill tax and left landowners facing remediation costs of more than £3.2 million, while causing infestations, arson and business closures.
The defendants pleaded guilty to offences under environmental law, company law and fraud.
Richard Beynon specialises in environmental and regulatory prosecutions and was instructed on behalf of the Environment Agency
