Terrorism

Our terrorism barristers have formidable experience in terrorism law, having defended and prosecuted in some of the highest profile terrorism cases.

Red Lion Chambers’ terrorism barristers have held a position at the forefront of this area of law for more than 70 years. Our members have defended and prosecuted such cases as the Guildford Four (bombing of pubs); R. v. Hulme (the last IRA prosecution in this country); the Ricin poison plot; the Stanstead airport hijacking and the 21/7 attempted bombings in London. Members have, more recently, prosecuted individuals holding Islamic extremist ideologies and supporting Islamic State and other extremist organisations in addition to prosecuting the co-founder and other members of the neo-Nazi organisation National Action. Current members have significant experience of dealing with issues of national security and closed proceedings.

We are one of the few Sets to offer specialist advisory and advocacy services to both prosecution and defence, as well as maintaining a presence on the CPS list of specialist advocates for terrorism cases. Our former Head of Chambers Max Hill QC was appointed as the Independent Reviewer of Terrorism Legislation in 2017, further demonstrating our expertise as a chambers.

Our terrorism expertise includes cases relating to:

  • the prosecution of individuals holding extreme right wing and Islamic extremist ideologies
  • matters of national security.
  • providing international organisations and government bodies with advice on terror-related practices
  • building capacity to prosecute terrorism offences in foreign jurisdictions.
