Military Law

We are proud of our long history of defending and representing those serving in Her Majesty’s Armed Forces. A number of members of Red Lion Chambers have military backgrounds and have served within the Armed Forces.

Our members draw on their leading Crime expertise to represent and defend both officers and the enlisted, as well as prosecuted civilians and the family members of service personnel, at all level of proceedings – from single Service Boards through to Court Martial Centres, the Court Martial Appeal Court, the Summary Appeal Court and the Service Civilian Court, as well as in military inquests and service inquiries and referrals to the Coroners’ Court.

Members of Red Lion Chambers have acted for members of all three services both in the UK and overseas, in particular in Germany and arising from operations in Iraq, Afghanistan, Northern Ireland and the Gulf.

Our nationally-respected Crime expertise has established our military law barristers as some of the go-to professionals acting for individuals accused of a wide range of military and civilian offences, including Serious Violence, Murder & Manslaughter, Drugs Offences, Sexual Offences and Fraud, as well as those relating to weapons offences and allegations of torture. Members are routinely instructed from an early stage, including ‘pre-charge’, and in providing written representations to the Service Prosecuting Authority to discontinue proceedings. We are also skilled at drafting representations to the Armed Forces Criminal Legal Aid Authority in order to secure funding for professional litigators or expert witnesses.

Our military law expertise includes:

  • Court Marshals
  • Boards of Inquiry
  • Military Inquests.
