Ed Renvoize secures conviction in Attempted Murder case

January 17, 2025

Douglas Clifton Brown, 56, has been convicted of attempted murder for attacking his former partner, Camilla Welby, and attempting to throw her into a disused well on his family’s estate in west Norfolk.

The conviction was secured by prosecutor Ed Renvoize following a unanimous verdict by the jury.

The incident occurred in August 2023, after the pair, who had been in a 15-year relationship but were separated at the time, attended a drinks party at a friend’s home. As they returned to the property where they lived separately, Clifton Brown launched a violent attack. He struck Ms. Welby repeatedly in the face and threatened, “I will put you down the well to kill you, then kill myself.”

Clifton Brown, an Old Etonian whose grandfather served as the high sheriff of Norfolk and whose family includes several MPs, admitted to causing grievous bodily harm with intent and making a threat to kill.

Despite his admissions, he denied attempted murder, a claim rejected by the jury after five hours of deliberation.

During the attack, Clifton Brown attempted to drag Ms. Welby from the car toward the well, but she managed to stop him by wrapping her scarf around his neck. She sustained serious injuries, including a fractured nose, a broken finger, and significant bruising to her head and face.

Clifton Brown will be sentenced on 13 March at Norfolk Crown Court.
