Kate Bex KC joined Nick Ferrari on LBC News Breakfast this morning (27 Nov) to provide expert analysis on the forthcoming sentencing of Paul Doyle, the 54 yr old who ploughed his car into a large crowd of supporters during Liverpool FC’s victory parade on 26 May earlier this year. He pleaded guilty on the second day of trial, after the jury had been sworn and just as the prosecution was about the open the case to the jury.
Kate explained that Paul Doyle’s late guilty pleas were not unusual, though if he had admitted his guilt earlier it would have saved his victims considerable anguish and secured him up to the maximum one third reduction to the inevitable prison sentence that he will receive. Kate explained it was very likely that the prosecution would argue that this was a Category 1A case under the Sentencing Council Guidelines. She noted that the sentencing exercise will be particularly complex because the facts of the offence are unusual; although it involved serious injury to many people, fortunately there were no fatalities and so little assistance is derived from other cases involving large scale attacks on the public which have sadly often resulted in multiple deaths.
The sentence is scheduled for two days starting on 15 December.
