Cyrus Shroff and Faye Rolfe have prosecuted a foster carer who assaulted a baby in her care, securing conviction for 7 counts of child cruelty.
The abuse all took place behind closed doors, with professionals misled as to the cause of the child’s ill-health by the defendant’s sophisticated manipulation and lies. The true cause of the child’s injuries, which included burns, forcible removal of nails, extensive bruising and malnutrition was brought to light through the evidence of medical experts in the fields of paediatric dermatology and burns.
Upon the child’s removal from the defendant and receiving proper medical attention the child has recovered, returned to his birth mother and been joined by a baby brother with no further social services involvement needed in any of their lives.
This week the defendant was sentenced at Basildon Crown Court to a period 8.5 years imprisonment with an extended license period of 18 months, following a finding of ‘dangerousness’.
