Max Baines represented UK Athletics before an independent disciplinary panel which banned Ultra-marathon runner Joasia Zakrzewski for 12 months for using a car in a race.
Ms. Zakrzewski crossed the finish-line third in the 2023 GB Ultras Manchester to Liverpool 50-mile race on 7 April 2023.
However, tracking information showed that she had covered a mile of the race in 1 minute and 40 seconds.
Ms. Zakrzewski claimed she told officials on the day that she used a car and had finished the race “in a non-competitive way”. However, she accepted a medal and a trophy at the finish and later posted about the race on social media without any reference to the incident.
Ms Zakrzewski had represented Scotland at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow and just weeks before the GB Ultras Manchester to Liverpool race had broken the world record for the most miles run by a woman in 48 hours, which has since been beaten by US runner Camille Herron.
Max Baines is a leading practitioner in the sports arena and appears on behalf of UK Athletics, the Football Association and the British Horseracing Authority. He is an advisor to UK Anti-Doping and has undertaken work for the Rugby Football Union and Rugby Football League.
