Tony Shaw QC secures acquittal in LIBOR trial

January 28, 2016

Tony Shaw QC today concluded a 3½ month defence at Southwark Crown Court with the acquittal of his client by a unanimous verdict of the jury. Mr Wilkinson, a former MRIS desk head at ICAP had been indicted with other brokers for conspiracy to defraud by manipulating yen LIBOR rates for the benefit of Tom Hayes, a UBS trader who had been convicted of conspiracy at an earlier trial. Issues in the case concerned the BBA’s governance of LIBOR; lowballing and other false bank submissions; banker-banker relations; and run-throughs and predictions as to future LIBOR fixes issued by individual brokers.
