Syam Soni has concluded a high profile and sensitive case arising from a fatal incident of dangerous driving. The matter involved a defendant travelling at more than 80mph in a 30mph zone, resulting in the tragic death of a 19‑year‑old aspiring doctor.
The matter was complicated by the defendant’s history of driving‑related offences, the absence of direct testimony and the need for specialist evidence including expert speech analysis and forensic investigation into collusion.
Syam successfully secured the admission of bad character evidence against a witness, following detailed legal submissions, with the judge ruling it relevant and admissible. He also successfully persuaded the prosecution not to adduce the defendant’s older, non‑driving related convictions, arguing their irrelevance — a step the prosecution had otherwise intended to take.
Both the prosecution and the judge praised Syam’s advocacy and professionalism with which the case was managed.
