Simon Spence KC reacts to Court Backlogs

October 8, 2024

Simon Spence KC was asked for his reaction following a recent Times article which revealed that the Justice Secretary and government will not provide the necessary funding to increase judicial sitting days.

In a letter to the Justice Secretary, Baroness Carr of Walton-on-the-Hill condemned the government’s increase of just 500 Crown Court sitting days as insufficient. She emphasised that at least 5,500 additional days are required to address the backlog of Crown Court cases, which is projected to surge to 80,000 next year.
