Rare poisoning trial ends with unanimous convictions

November 1, 2024

Ed Vickers KC and Ed Renvoize have secured the conviction of a man who administered unlawfully obtained abortion pills to a pregnant woman, to procure a miscarriage against her will.

Stuart Worby spiked the woman’s glass of orange juice with mifepristone and 24 hours later deceived her into having what he described as “kinky sex” so that, having bound her hands and blindfolded her, he was able to administer the 2nd of the two abortion drugs, misoprostol, without her knowledge.

The 15-week pregnant woman miscarried in hospital hours later.

Mr Worby was convicted by a unanimous jury at Norwich Crown Court of assault by penetration and administering a poison with intent to procure a miscarriage.

Nueza Cepeda, the woman who unlawfully obtained the abortion medication for Worby, pleaded guilty at an earlier hearing.

The charges were brought under the now rarely used sections 58 and 59 of the Offences Against the Person Act 1861.

Mr Justice Bennathan adjourned sentence until 6th December.
