Professor Susan Edwards’ CPS lecture marks “Global 16 days campaign”

Professor Susan Edwards (RLC Door Tenant) will be delivering a talk to the CPS in London to mark the “Global 16 days campaign” which focuses on gender-based violence.

The campaign runs every year from 25 November (the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women) to 10 December, Human Rights Day.

Speaking on Tuesday 28 November, Professor Susan Edwards will evaluate the impact of the DAA in protecting victims of domestic abuse including:

-a case update on s70 DAA Strangulation and Suffocation (Serious Crime Act 2015 s75A) and coercive control (SCA s76)
-update on new government measures and proposals to enhance prosecution

Susan Edwards is an Emeritus Professor at the University of Buckingham and former Dean of Law for several years. She is a barrister and an expert witness on domestic abuse (MEWI) and gave evidence in a recent case for the defence. She has written widely on domestic abuse for many years, most recent work of relevance:- ‘The strangulation of female partners’ (2015) 12 Criminal Law Review 949-966; (2020)‘Consent and the “Rough Sex” Defence in Rape, Murder, Manslaughter and Gross Negligence’ Journal of Criminal Law 84 (293).
