Michael Goodwin QC and Sailesh Mehta presented Panel Discussion on ‘Fire Law and Building Safety’ at FIREX International Conference

May 23, 2022

Michael Goodwin QC and Sailesh Mehta took part in a panel discussion at the FIREX International Conference at the Excel Centre in London on 17 May, 2022. Joined by Fire Specialist Colin Todd (CS Todd and Associates) and Nick Gianferrari (BLM Solicitors) the group discussed Fire Law and Building Safety and presented to the audience on topics such as: Bringing a Fire Prosecution, Defence Case and Strategy, Evidence Collation including Witness statements, Compliance issues and Health and Safety regulation for business to Mitigating and Sentencing.

Michael Goodwin QC said:

“We were delighted to provide an informative training discussion to the FIREX International Conference”.

The panel was expertly chaired by Sailesh Mehta who heads the Fire Law Team at Red Lion Chambers. He commented:

“There is likely to be a shift in culture in relation to “light touch regulation”. After Grenfell, there is a greater expectation that Fire Services will prosecute more: businesses, commercial property owners and directors of companies will be in the firing line. So it is essential that Prosecutors and defence lawyers learn about this important area of law.”

This year’s FIREX International has seen over 1000 people within the fire safety community gather together at the Excel Centre in the 4 day conference with senior professionals from security, facilities management, health and safety and smart buildings in attendance.

VIPs included the government’s senior fire advisor, Sir Ken Knight who is currently the chair of the Independent Expert Advisory Panel at the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities- formed in the immediate aftermath of the Grenfell blaze to advise on fire safety.

Red Lion Chambers Fire Law Team has specialist barristers offering expert, business focussed, robust advice and advocacy. The Team represents corporations, company directors, UK fire and rescue authorities, as well as public and investigatory bodies.
