Kate Bex KC discusses the case of serial killer Lucy Letby

August 22, 2023

Kate Bex KC was interviewed by LBC Radio and BBC Radio London in reaction to serial killer Lucy Letby’s refusal to attend her sentence hearing which took place at Manchester Crown Court on 21st August 2023.

Lucy Letby had been found guilty of murdering seven babies on a neonatal unit and attempting to kill six more and received a whole life sentence. The 33 year old refused to appear in the dock and so avoided hearing the families’ victim personal statements & the sentencing remarks from the trial judge, Mr Justice Goss.

Kate discussed whether a defendant could be brought to court against their will, reasons why adding additional time to a whole life sentence would have no effect, the impact on victims when defendants are disruptive and how the focus of a sentence hearing is for the victims to have their opportunity to describe the impact of the offence on them. Mr Justice Goss requested that Letby be provided with copies of the victim personal statements.
