Joanna Hardy‑Susskind was invited to join Radio 4’s ‘Free Thinking’ roundtable discussion contributing to a programme entitled ‘Crime and Punishment: Medieval to Modern.’
The discussion brought together leading commentators to examine how attitudes to punishment have evolved and the principles that continue to shape the criminal justice system. The conversation, chaired by Matthew Sweet, explored the shifting rationale behind punishment — including retribution, deterrence, rehabilitation and the protection of the public.

Joanna Hardy‑Susskind is a defence barrister specialising in serious crime.  She writes and speaks widely on issues affecting the criminal courts and in 2025 made her BBC broadcasting debut with ‘You Do Not Have to Say Anything’ a ten‑episode series for BBC Radio 4 and BBC Sounds. She has twice given evidence to the House of Commons Justice Committee, representing the views of the profession.
