How cognitive bias shapes expert evidence – What can we do to identify, expose, and minimise it?

April 22, 2026 18:00-21:00

Even expert witnesses are human too.  Despite adopting a scientific method, expert witnesses may sometimes fall prey to biased decision making, and as practitioners in the criminal courts it is crucial we can recognise it, understand how it may impact our client’s case, and how we can challenge it.

Red Lion Chambers is pleased to invite you to an evening seminar (with options to attend in person, or online), with guest speaker Dr Itiel Dror, to explore this pressing issue in forensic and legal practice: “How cognitive bias shapes expert evidence – What can we do to identify, expose, and minimise it?”

Chaired by Richard Beynon of Red Lion Chambers, we will examine:

• The myth of expert objectivity and impartiality

• The use and misuse of scientific evidence in the courtroom

• How the brain’s cognitive architecture creates bias in expert witnesses

• Practical strategies to recognise, challenge and reduce cognitive bias

This seminar will be of particular interest to practitioners handling cases involving forensic science and expert evidence, as well as those working across regulatory or public law who regularly engage with the reliability, presentation and scrutiny of scientific evidence.

To attend please email rsvp@18rlc.co.uk indicating whether you would like to attend in-person, or via a video link (although please note in-person places are limited due to space restrictions).
