East London Business Alliance [ELBA] mentees participated in a mock trial at the Old Bailey on Thursday 20th July 2023 where members of RLC volunteered as jurors and witnesses with the Recorder of London, HHJ Mark Lucraft KC presiding as Judge.
First launched in October of 2019, RLC are the first Chambers to partner with ELBA, with a focus on education, employment and supporting law students from non-traditional backgrounds to experience the world of the Bar.
The programme culminated with a Mock Trial at the Old Bailey where mentees were given the opportunity to showcase essential skills such as public speaking, critical thinking and the art of forming a persuasive, cohesive argument.
RLC members taking part in the Mock Trial included Gillian Jones KC, Michelle Nelson KC, Anita Clifford, Francesca Kirby, Serena Gates, Alex Benn, Jack Kiffin and Zoë Chapman.
RLC mentees included Sana Patel, Preetam Singh, Maria Jeffrey, Joan Wee, Amal Abdullahi with Ngavoon Ho, Evelyn Lau and Kanika Gupta joining virtually.
Mentors for the 2023 year long programme include co-Head of Chambers Gillian Jones KC, Michelle Nelson KC, Alistair Fell, Aneurin Brewer, Tim Kiely, Anita Clifford, Michael Goodwin KC, Zoë Chapman, Jack Talbot, Gillian Jones KC, Sophie Quinton-Carter, Ed Renvoize, Francesca Kirby, Josh Ellis and Serena Gates.
ELBA has been supporting the social and economic regeneration of East London for over 30 years. The charity works in partnership with business and the local community, including universities and schools, to build the capacity of local organisations and the community, harnessing the time, skills and expertise of volunteers. RLC is committed to promoting and developing equality, diversity and inclusivity. Our 2022 programme welcomed the first visibly impaired mentee.
