This month barristers from Red Lion Chambers organised and assisted six form students prepare for and take part in a nationwide Citizenship Foundation Mock Trial Competition. Jane Bewsey QC, Felicia Davy, Trevor Archer, Samantha Wright and Andrew Herd all acted as barrister mentors. They attended the schools to teach about the criminal justice system, and help them prepare for the competition. Michael Goodwin acted as Regional Coordinator for the heat, which was held at Guildford Crown Court. The day involved the students from each school playing the parts of barristers, witnesses, the court staff, the jury and the defendant. Each team prosecuted and defended 3 trials judged by real judges. The day was the culmination of many weeks of painstaking preparation. Students from all backgrounds had the opportunity to perform in a public arena whilst learning about the criminal justice system.
