July’s cover article, “Sanctions compliance” examines what firms should be doing to ensure they do not fall foul of sanctions laws in the wake of news that the SRA is conducting spot checks for sanctions compliance. Anita commented:
“With news that the SRA are performing spot checks, firms need to ensure that their sanctions policies are up to date and proportionate to the nature of their work and the types of clients that it deals with. Sanctions observance is not just the responsibility of the compliance team. A clearly set out policy that is understood by fee earners and support staff alike is important, as will be training on how to conduct sanctions checks and what to do if a concern or suspicion arises. Sanctions enforcement is currently behind AML enforcement but there are signs it is rapidly catching up.”
