Alex Benn has written an opinion piece for “The Voices” section of The Independent examining The Equality Act 2010 and whether it is time the law should recognise discrimination against someone based on their class as a specific criminal or civil wrong.
Alex argues: “once we recognise classism as a prolific form of discrimination, we should accept that it deserves equal billing with the better-known forms.”

RLC member Alex Benn is a lecturer at University College,Oxford, specialising in criminal and discrimination law. Alex put forward the first in-depth, academic proposal to protect class in discrimination law in ’The Big Gap in Discrimination Law’ (2020, Oxford Human Rights Hub Journal) and in criminal law in ‘Classism as Hate Crime’ (2021, Criminal Law Review), cited by the Law Commission of England Wales in its Hate Crime Laws: Final Report (2021).
