The Telegraph interviews RL Consultant Sir Mark Rowley QPM

April 25, 2022

RL Consultant Sir Mark Rowley QPM has held a highly successful 31-year career in policing including posts as Chief Constable of Surrey; Assistant Commissioner at the Metropolitan Police; and lastly head of UK Counter Terrorism Policing. Globally recognised for his leadership expertise in national security and policing, after retiring in 2018 Sir Mark was knighted in the Queen’s Birthday Honours for his

“exceptional contribution to national security at a time of unprecedented threat and personally providing reassuring national leadership through the attacks of 2017”.

In a recent feature interview by the Telegraph Sir Mark reflected on his career in policing and counter-terrorism, and the latest issues in the Metropolitan Police, and commented on the high profile terrorist case of Islamic jihadi Shamima Begum. He said that he would like to see

“a joined-up international effort to spend more resources on prosecuting terrorist leaders for war crimes, something currently difficult because of the high burdens of proof involved, and the fact that witnesses are often refugees and scattered across continents.”

Most notably he published in 2021 ‘Operating with Impunity’ with the Commission for Countering Extremism, making ground-breaking recommendations to Government on closing the legal loopholes exploited by extremists.

In the interview Sir Mark also spoke about The Sleep of Reason – his new debut crime thriller written with his long-time close friend and journalist David Derbyshire, published by Legend Press in April 2022. The novel captures the complex challenges faced by police in countering terrorist groups, and explores radicalisation, extremism, and violence in contemporary Britain and promises not to showcase “another divorced borderline alcoholic DI who’s a brilliant detective struggling to hold his life together!”.
