Jordan McSweeney, who stalked and murdered Zara Aleena in Ilford has won a Court of Appeal challenge to have his minimum tariff of 38 years reduced.
In a ruling on Friday 3 November, 2023, three judges found the sentencing judge had imposed too high an “uplift” to McSweeney’s minimum term, and reduced it to 33 years.
Simon Spence KC spoke to Natasha Devon on Saturday 4th November and was asked to explain the sentencing process, the role of the Sentencing Judges, schedule 21 to the Sentencing Act 2020, the definition of a minimum term and the role of the parole board.
