Simon Spence KC joined Nick Ferrari on LBC News Breakfast this morning (7th Oct) as well as Talk Radio to provide expert legal insight following the sentencing of three men who assaulted police officers during protests outside The Bell Hotel in Epping.
The protests were triggered by the conviction of a man who sexually assaulted a 14-year-old girl and a woman. He was sentenced to one year in prison — a decision that sparked public concern over the perceived leniency. Simon Spence KC clarified the legal framework behind the sentencing, explaining the difference between the Magistrates’ Court and the Crown Court and how, in this case, the offences were suitable to be tried in the Magistrates’ Court, which meant the maximum sentence available was 12 months.
