Simon Spence KC interviewed by LBC News

Simon Spence KC was invited to join a number of radio stations this morning including Nick Ferrari on LBC News to discuss the government’s forthcoming restrictions on the Sentencing Council.

In the interview, he addressed the challenges surrounding the following points:

• The Justice Secretary (Shabana Mahmood) having a veto over any new sentencing guidelines
• Any future guidelines must now receive joint approval from both the Justice Secretary and the Lady Chief Justice
• Raises important questions about political oversight in what should remain a rational, objective and independent function of the Sentencing Council
• The change will be enacted through the Sentencing Bill, which is set to be introduced in the House of Commons today
