Sailesh Mehta provides legal opinion to The Guardian and i paper

Sailesh Mehta was asked to provide expert legal analysis to the Guardian and the i paper with regards to comments made by Conservative party donor Frank Hester towards MP Diane Abbott which potentially constituted of a criminal offence of stirring up racial hatred as outlined by Part III of the Public Order Act 1986.

The Act makes it a criminal offence to use threatening, abusive or insulting words, either with the intention to stir up racial hatred, or if racial hatred is likely to be stirred up. Offences under Part III of the Public Order Act carry a maximum sentence of seven years imprisonment or a fine or both.
