RLC recognised for fourth year as Tier 1 for Crime in latest Legal 500 2024 rankings

Red Lion Chambers are pleased to have maintained Tier 1 ranking in the category of Crime (London) and Crime (South Eastern Circuit) in this year’s Legal 500 for the fourth year running with recommendations in Business and Regulatory Crime and Fraud.

• A total of 74 rankings in 14 practice areas
• 19 barristers are listed in the elite “Leading silk” group
• 32 barristers are listed in the “Leading juniors” group
• New entries included Leila Chaker in Professional Discipline

Chambers were ranked across 14 practice areas including: Crime, Business and Regulatory Crime including Global Investigations, Financial Services Regulation; Fraud (Civil); Fraud (Crime); Health and Safety; International Crime and Extradition, POCA and Asset Forfeiture, Professional disciplinary and regulatory law, Tax, Environment and Sport.

The 2024 guide for Crime recognised RLC as ‘a very strong chambers with strength and depth at all levels of call, including silks’ with a ‘clerks’ room second to none’ and ‘friendly, helpful and knowledgeable about their barristers and their practices and those who may want to instruct them.’

Highlights included:

-Riel Karmy-Jones KC recognised as a top-tier silk whose ‘timely trial preparation, combined with pre-eminent advocacy skills, always ensures that every case she conducts is of the highest order.’
-Jennifer Dempster KC was cited as ‘an eloquent and tenacious advocate’ representing a man who was acquitted of murder but convicted of manslaughter by reason of diminished responsibility in the first televised sentencing in England and Wales.
-Special mention was made of Edward Renvoize who prosecuted two men, who received prison sentences of twelve and fifteen years imprisonment for a home invasion robbery of two-time Tour de France green jersey winner Mark Cavendish, in which two Richard Mille watches with a combined value of £700,000 were stolen.

Recognised for work in Business Crime, Chambers were recognised as ‘one of the leading sets for serious and complex fraud work’ with ‘an array of talented counsel’ and noted in particular for work with corporates in relation to regulatory and business crime.

Special Mentions included:

-Gillian Jones KC described as a ‘quick-thinking, fluent and penetrating advocate’ who was instructed to defend an individual alleged to have orchestrated a £50m international Ponzi scheme using a corporate vehicle, namely forex trading firm Capital World
-Felicia Davy was noted as a ‘fearless and commanding advocate’ who regularly prosecutes and defends both individuals and corporate clients in relation to major fraud and money laundering offences.
