RLC members recently helped deliver a ‘CPS Mock Trial Advocacy Training Programme’ for new Crown Advocates alongside the CPS London and South East Crown Advocacy Unit. This three-month Programme culminated in three mock trials at the Central Criminal Court (Old Bailey) earlier this month.
The RLC team was led by Michael Goodwin KC, Trevor Archer and Emily Mattin. The CPS team was led by Crown Advocacy Managers. The programme gave CPS Crown Advocates, new to Crown Court advocacy, the opportunity to put their advocacy skills into practice in a realistic courtroom setting.
David Malone, Deputy Chief Crown Prosecutor, for the CPS Crown Advocacy Unit commented:
“I have been incredibly impressed by the quality of the Advocacy Training Programme put together by the joint team and the support provided by Red Lion Chambers. Their barristers brought a wealth of experience, insight and enthusiasm to the training, giving Crown Advocates a valuable opportunity to develop their advocacy skills while gaining a greater understanding of the self-employed criminal bar and defence practice.”
All of the Judges, all of whom were practising Circuit Judges were impressed with the high standard of advocacy with a senior Old Bailey Judge commenting that the standard of advocacy was “really excellent”.
The Advocacy Trainers who took part in the programme included Michael Goodwin KC, Kate Bex KC, Ed Vickers KC, Cameron Brown KC, Valerie Charbit, Hugh French, Jack Talbot, Trevor Archer, Hannah Williams, Jane Oldfield, Letitia Egan and Emily Mattin (RLC) and Frederick Hookway (5KBW).
