Edmund Vickers, of Red Lion Chambers, successfully appeared for the defence in the first ever prosecution of FGM offences in the UK. The case involved allegations against an NHS doctor and another of causing FGM to a Somalian woman after childbirth and raised novel and complex medico-legal issues. After a three week trial, in which five medical experts gave evidence, the defendants were acquitted in less than 20 minutes by the jury. The case attracted widespread national media coverage.
