Dan Taylor and Anita Clifford secure acquittal in landmark EncroChat case

December 15, 2023

Following a five-week trial at Luton Crown Court, Dan Taylor, leading Anita Clifford, secured a not guilty verdict on a landmark EncroChat case.

In what was thought to be the first prosecution of its kind in England and Wales, Dan and Anita’s client was charged alongside others, with conspiring to commit an offence contrary to section 46 of the Serious Crime Act 2007. It was alleged that between March 2020 and June 2021, DB had sold numerous EncroChat phones to members of organised criminal groups nationwide, knowing that they would be used in furtherance of criminal activity, namely the supply and importation of firearms and Class A drugs. The case involved over 100,000 pages of served evidence and gave rise to a number of complicated and novel legal issues. Dan and Anita’s client was the only one of four defendants to be acquitted at trial.

Both Dan and Anita have extensive experience in defending in cases across the criminal spectrum including large-scale drug conspiracies. They were instructed by Attiq Malik and Laura O’Brien at Liberty Law Solicitors.
