Congratulations to new tenant Basanti Mardemootoo

Having completed her pupillage, Chambers is delighted to congratulate and welcome Basanti Mardemootoo as a tenant of Chambers.

Ian McLoughlin KC, Head of the Education Training Committee said: “I am very pleased to welcome Basanti as a tenant following the successful completion of her pupillage at Chambers. Over the past eighteen months, she has developed her legal expertise and advocacy skills while working alongside members across a wide range of practice areas and managing her own cases in court. Her commitment and diligence have been exceptional and she has thrived throughout every stage of her training. We wish her every success in her career at the Bar and look forward to supporting her throughout her journey.”

Prior to pupillage, Basanti worked as a paralegal at Bhatt Murphy Solicitors, contributing to the Covid-19 Public Inquiry and assisting on an Article 2 inquest involving a death in custody. She has also gained international experience through roles at the International Criminal Court and the United Nations, where she undertook legal research, policy analysis, and project work on counter-terrorism and human rights issues. Alongside this, Basanti has volunteered with several organisations, including teaching advocacy skills to prisoners at HMP Pentonville through Vocalise.

Basanti regularly appears for the prosecution and defence in the Magistrates’ Court, Youth Court and Crown Court. She has experience in a range of matters from road traffic offences to grievous bodily harm and looks forward to building her general Crime practice. Read more here.
