Bethan Rogers has prosecuted a honour based violence case involving charges of coercive and controlling behaviour, false imprisonment, kidnap, numerous assaults of police officers and dangerous driving.
The case involved a 18 year old vulnerable and unwilling victim who had to be summoned to court to give evidence. The defendants were brothers and mother of the victim who had entered her into an arranged marriage.
In the months following the marriage the family had grown dissatisfied with the choice of partner and had controlled the movements of the victim against her will, in an attempt to engineer a divorce.
When the police were alerted to the victim’s situation, the victim was kidnapped from the family home to be moved to an unknown location. The act culminated in a serious car crash on the A40.
The defendants pleaded guilty to coercive and controlling behaviour, kidnapping and dangerous driving.
