Anita Clifford announced in this year’s The Lawyer “Hot 100” roll call

January 29, 2025

Congratulations to Anita Clifford who has been recognised in this year’s The Lawyer’s Hot 100.

Since 2021, Anita has worked alongside the Global Legal Action Network (GLAN) and on behalf of the World Uyghur Congress, challenged the NCA’s decision to not investigate suspected breaches of the POCA over cotton imports from Xinjiang, China. She saw a victory for her clients in 2024 when the Court of Appeal formally acknowledged the suffering of the Uyghur community in China. The landmark decision also cut new ground by demonstrating how money laundering offences can be applied to commercial transactions involving the supply chain where there is suspected use of slave labour.

This year she is set to represent a sanctioned individual challenging the global anti-corruption sanctions they are facing. Looking ahead, she aims to develop a specialised expertise in examining the intersection between POCA and human rights abuses.
