Article 2 inquests can provide a unique forum to understand “by what means and in what circumstances” a death occurred and to learn lessons to prevent future deaths.

This session will provide a unique opportunity to gain insights from the Chief Coroner on key developments in inquests and coronial law.

HHJ Lucraft QC

Chief Coroner of England and Wales

His Honour Judge Mark Lucraft QC was appointed the second Chief Coroner of England and Wales on 18 August 2016. He was called to the Bar in 1984 and took Silk in 2006 taking an appointment to the Circuit Bench in July 2012. He was authorised to sit as a Deputy High Court Judge under section 9(1) on 22 November 2016, and appointed a Senior Circuit Judge at the Central Criminal Court on 7 February 2017. On 14 April 2020 he took up office as the Recorder of London: the senior judge at the Central Criminal Court. He was responsible for holding the Inquests into the deaths in the terror attacks at Westminster Bridge on 22 March 2017 and London Bridge and Borough Market on 3 June 2017.
